After Alex was admitted to the hospital today, they decided they needed to do an MRV (like an MRI but of veins) to determine which vein would be best for the new catheter. MRVs take about 20 minutes of being in a small tube with very loud noises. It is a scary experience for anyone. Alex is normally anaesthetised for MRIs and MRVs, but it wasn't a safe option today. For five hours we tried to talk Alex into laying still in the MRV tube without moving or crying. If we were to put her under, they wanted to keep her under all night and put her on the ventilator until tomorrow. THIS WAS NOT AN OPTION! We prayed, begged and pleaded with Alex to do the MRV. She finally agreed to try it and after 20 minutes of LOUD noises, screaming, and me and Mom hollering positive comments at Alex, the MRV was over. Alex was SO proud of herself. When we told her it was over, she collapsed crying because she was so proud. Alex has conquered many many tasks in her life, and this was one of the top accomplishments! She said that in all her 15 years, she had never done an MRI while awake. Boy was she proud!
Now we wait. Time is of the essence. She hasn't been dialysized since Wednesday so we need a catheter fast. The good news is the artery with the original catheter clotted and saved her life last night...the bad news is the artery clotted and we have to find another place to go. Tomorrow will tell. If all goes as planned, they look at the MRV and find a vein in the leg, install a catheter, dialysize and we are on our way home on Monday. But the Lord has a plan. Pray! We've been here once before...and vowed to never be here again. Pray pray pray!
