At 1:00 today they decided to take Alex in for surgery to repair the hemo line. An xray showed a kink and part of the catheter is exposed out of the skin and it shouldn't be. Before the surgery, the doctor came in, looked at it, and left. He said it was infected and he wasn't touching it. This created a whole new problem.
They decided to dialysize her tonight (it was successful) and put her on two hours of antibiotics while she was at the hospital. Although there is a kink in the line, it isn't severe enough to hinder the blood flow. The main issue is part of the catheter is exposed and it is infected. After the antibiotics, they sent her home for the weekend. On Monday she will be admitted to the hospital and they will remove the hemo catheter. An infection in this area can be very serious so they want to get it out ASAP. They will dialysize before they remove it. She will be put under an anesthesia for this. Then on Wednesday they will put in a new catheter. You may be thinking "Wait, didn't they say there was no more access after this catheter?" You are correct. That is what they told us and that is still the case. They are going to try and use the same vein and artery but access it in a different area of her skin to avoid the infection. This procedure will also call for anesthesia.
All of this hit us like a ton of bricks today. Alex has only been home for a few days and she is improving. We really don't want this to be another set back. Please pray for strength and a quick recovery with this procedure. As Alex said today, this catheter is her lifeline!
It is a blessing that mom and Alex get to stay home this weekend. Alex can continue to rest and regain her strength for another big week to come!
