Every day is a new and "exciting" adventure with Alex. It has been for 14 years and it will continue to be one. Due to Alex's fame, we decided it was best to create a blog to keep everyone updated on the ever changing events in her life. No one in our family claims to be a talented "blogger" so bear with us. This will be our first blog ever!
Alex has been in ICU since last Tuesday, July 7th. She had an adverse reaction to anaesthesia and aspirated stomach acid into her lungs. That has created a slew of issues over the past week, but we have seen God work in a mighty way. At this time she is overcoming an infection in her body. The doctors diagnosed her with sepsis (basically a widespread infection) and pneumonia caused by the aspiration. Her CRP (a clear indicator of her infection) tohas started to drop. (This is a very good thing!) Her fever has also dropped over the past 24 hours- another positive sign that the infection within her body is beginning to heal. Her dialysis pulled off almost 4 liters of fluid so she looks great.
Yesterday, we found that her PIC line (a glorified IV which was put in through surgical procedure on Tuesday...what got us into all of this mess) has failed. They removed it yesterday. At this time all of her meds are going in through her hemo dialysis port. This is okay for now, but we cannot do another dialysis session until we have access to give her meds...another PIC line. They will be doing an MRV (MRI for veins) this afternoon to find a juicy vein to put in a new PIC. After that, we will install the new PIC and then do dialys
is. The installation process will probably be tomorrow.
The other concern is her lungs. Although the pneumonia is showing some signs of improvement, her lungs are damaged. They are beginning to show signs of inflammation and stiffness. They have increased her respirator until the stiffness calms down. We are not on a one way street with the inflammation and at any time things can turn around and the healing process can begin. Until then, we will wait and pray.
God is amazing. Through this week of nightmares, he has brought comfort to our family and Alex. She looks as peaceful as she ever has. He blesses us with good nurses (and patience when we don't seem to have them) and a strong family. Each day we continue to pray for Alex and her strength. We know he hears our prayers and we find hope in Him. Our fear will not overcome our faith.
